Abstract
The objective of this study is to assess the susceptibility of the coastal region of Padang City, West Sumatra, to liquefaction, given its recognized propensity for high seismic activity. The analysis was conducted using Cone Penetration Test (CPT) data and the Liquefaction Potential Index (LPI) method to assess the vulnerability of the soil to liquefaction due to earthquakes. The technical parameters that were analyzed include the Cyclic Stress Ratio (CSR), Cyclic Resistance Ratio (CRR), Magnitude Scaling Factor (MSF), and Safety Factor (FS). These were calculated based on CPT data from four borehole locations (S-1 to S-4) with depths ranging from 1 to 3.2 meters. The analysis results indicate that all sondir locations are characterized by the predominance of loose sand soil types, exhibiting low to moderate liquefaction potential. The variation in FS values indicates that certain soil layers are below the safety threshold (FS < 1), particularly at shallow depths. The total LPI values range from 1.241 to 3.266, which is categorized as low liquefaction potential. The findings, as illustrated by graphical visualizations and LPI contours, indicate that shallow soil layers exhibit a heightened susceptibility to liquefaction in comparison to deeper layers. This study underscores the importance of geotechnical evaluations based on CPT and LPI in foundation planning and earthquake risk mitigation in coastal areas. Further recommendations include the integration of geophysical methods and numerical modeling to enhance spatial and dynamic liquefaction risk analysis.
