English language variation, particularly the differences between American and
British English, poses significant challenges in English language education worldwide.
These variations in pronunciation, spelling, and vocabulary can potentially impact
students' comprehension and learning outcomes. This research examines the influence of
English variation on students' comprehension in Indonesia, specifically among second
semester English Language Education students at Indo Global Mandiri University
Palembang. The study focused on three primary aspects: pronunciation, spelling, and
vocabulary. Using qualitative methods, including vocabulary tests, audio tests, and
questionnaires, the research investigated which aspects most significantly influenced
students' English comprehension in a context where the American accent is predominant.
The results revealed confusion among respondents in distinguishing American and
British vocabulary due to subtle spelling differences and mixed vocabulary usage in
social contexts. Additionally, the audio test demonstrated that English variation
significantly influenced learners' spelling and pronunciation, as most students were more
accustomed to the American accent. These findings emphasize the importance of
incorporating awareness of English variation in English language teaching and learning
practices in Indonesia.
