ABSTRACT
Listening comprehension is an essential language skill that enables students to understand spoken English and supports communication. However, many students experience difficulties in comprehending spoken texts, making teaching media necessary. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of film utilization on tenth graders’ listening comprehension achievement. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design was employed. The participants were tenth-grade students of SMK Negeri 2 Palembang in 2025/2026. The sample consisted of 64 students, with 32 students in the experimental class and 32 in the control class. The instrument was a 40-item multiple-choice test. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, Levene’s homogeneity test, the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test, and the Mann-Whitney U Test through IBM SPSS Statistics version 26. The findings showed that students’ listening comprehension achievement improved after the treatment. The experimental class mean increased from 37.03 in the pre-test to 59.66 in the post-test, while the control class mean increased from 33.92 to 39.36. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test produced a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores. Furthermore, the Mann-Whitney U Test produced a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05) for the post-test, indicating a significant difference between the experimental and control classes after treatment. Meanwhile, the pre-test result showed a significance value of 0.767 (p > 0.05), indicating no significant difference between the classes before treatment. Therefore, film utilization was effective in improving tenth graders’ listening comprehension achievement at SMK Negeri 2 Palembang.
