Abstract
Nowadays, the majority of students lack mastery of vocabulary. Besides, students are also lack interested in studying English which ultimately made their English performance decreased or even poor. To increase students’ vocabulary, the writer chosen game. Game is an alternative to teach, one of them is charades game. Therefore, based on it, the objectives of this research were to find out whether there was the effectiveness of using charades game in improving English vocabulary mastery students and to know students’ perceptions towards charades game in studying English vocabulary. The method of the research was pre-experimental group design. The experimental teaching was conducted in 9 meetings, three meetings for pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire and 6 meetings for treatment of charades game. The population of this research was the sixth grade students of SDN 18 Palembang. For taking the sample, the researcher used total population sampling technique. The sample was all of students in the sixth grade which were 20 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used tests, namely pre-test and post-test, and also questionnaire. The researcher used the test instrument in the form of multiple choice, short answer, and True or False. The test consisted of 20 items and the questionnaire was 15 items. For analyzing the data, the researcher used paired samples-test with the help of SPSS software. From the data analysis, it was found that the mean score of pre-tets was 47.75, meanwhile the post-test was 78.5. It meant that the mean score of post-test was higher than the pre-test. It could be pointed out that the use of charades game could improve students’ vocabulary mastery. In the questionnaire result, students showed positive perceptions of charades game. Students stated that charades game helped them easier in studying vocabulary, made them happy, relax, enjoy, and more enthusiastic, and increased their motivation in studying English.
