Abstract

English learning plays an important role in today's era of globalization. But a lot of indonesia students still have difficulty understanding English reading texts. Therefore the purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using authentic reading materials for extensive reading in improving students' reading skills at SMPN 19 Palembang, as well as students' perceptions of the method. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a sample of class 7.7 consisting of 34 students as the experimental group and class 7.8 consisting of 32 students as the control group. Data collection was carried out through pretests and posttests which were analyzed using paired sample t-tests and independent t-tests with the help of SPSS version 25. The results of the study showed: 1) There was a significant increase in the reading comprehension achievement of students in the experimental group and a significant average difference between the experimental and control groups, although there was also an increase in scores in the control group; 2) The type of authentic reading materials that students like the most is brochures because of their visual aspects; 3) Students in the experimental group gave a positive perception of the use of authentic reading materials for extensive reading. In conclusion, the use of authentic reading materials for extensive reading has been proven to improve reading skills in seventh grade students of SMPN 19 Palembang.
