Abstract

Based on research, researchers found that several class VIII students at SMPN 38
Palembang had problems speaking English. There are several factors that influence this
problem, such as fear of making mistakes, anxiety, shame, lack of self-confidence, and low
motivation. Therefore, researchers want to build student motivation, encourage and
increase student self-confidence through the use of the one minute talk technique in the
classroom. This study aims to determine: (1) significant or not improving speaking skills
by using the one minute talk technique, and (2) whether or not there is a significant
difference in speaking skills between students who are taught using the one minute talk
technique and students who did not. Quasi-experimental research was used in this study.
There were 68 students as a sample, 34 students for the experimental group and 34 students
for the control group. Sampling was carried out using purposive sampling. The data were
collected using a speaking test. Data was analyzed by using Paired Sample T-test and
independent Sample T-test. Based on data analysis, it was revealed that there was a
significant increase in students' speaking skills. Before evidenced by the results of the
paired sample t-test with the t-test obtained (27.145) and a significant value (0.00) was
lower than α (0.05). It showed that students' speaking skills increased. Besides, the result
of independent sample t-test showed that t-obtained (27.145) and a significant value (0.00)
is lower than α (0.05). It is shown that there was a significant difference in students'
speaking skill between them those who were taught using the one minute talk technique
and those who were not.
