Abstract

ABSTRACT
South Sumatra has the second largest peatland area out of five provinces in Indonesia. One endemic plant species found in these peat swamps is the galam tree. The galam tree (Melaleuca leucadendra) is a hardwood native to peat swamp forests in South Sumatra. It is a pioneer species that tolerates extreme conditions such as acidic soil, high salinity, and waterlogging. This makes the galam tree a typical plant in peat swamp and freshwater swamp ecosystems, particularly in South Sumatra, which is home to numerous peat swamps. However, many people are still unaware of and do not understand this endemic species, its functions, and benefits. Furthermore, there is widespread exploitation of the galam tree. This is due to the increasing demand for wood from the galam tree as a building material. Young galam trees are being excessively cut down without replanting new galam tree seedlings. The purpose of this design is to reintroduce various types of galam trees as endemic plant species from South Sumatra, offering numerous environmental benefits (flood and landslide prevention) and human benefits (building materials, etc.). Using the 5W+1H analysis method, it is hoped that the public will become more aware of the galam tree and its benefits. Furthermore, this design also aims to encourage the public to conserve the galam tree, an endemic plant species from South Sumatra.
